Navigating complexity: SMS Group’s strategic solutions for cost-effective production

Thursday 4th June 11:55 - 12:25

Conference

The transformation of the steel industry is a complex and multi-dimensional undertaking. Steel products are produced via a variety of process routes and with diverse energy inputs, so selecting a forward-looking strategy is a major challenge for every producer. Decisions must balance capital expenditure, operating cost, feedstock availability, emissions targets and market requirements - all while managing technical risk and long-term competitiveness. To help steelmakers navigate these complexities, SMS offers the SMS Plant Assessment Tool, which quantifies effective costs across process routes and energy scenarios, enabling data-driven strategy development. In addition, following the acquisition of the former Metso Outotec assets, SMS is now positioned to provide expanded industrial applications and integrated solutions that support lower-cost inputs and more flexible production options. This presentation aims to show exemplary ways to decarbonize while maintaining full control over competitiveness.
