SSAB, in partnership with Danieli, is transforming its Luleå steelworks from a traditional blast furnace/basic oxygen furnace (BF-BOF) route to a modern electric arc furnace (EAF)-based mini-mill. The new facility will integrate two 210-ton EAF Digimelters equipped with Danieli’s Q-One digital power feeder, advanced secondary metallurgy, and a Quality Strip Production (QSP) direct casting and rolling line. This transformation enables fossil-free steel production using scrap and hydrogen-reduced iron, eliminating ~7% of Sweden’s CO₂ emissions by phasing out the current BF-BOF process. The direct strip casting–rolling (QSP) technology improves productivity and energy efficiency by avoiding slab re-heating, achieving up to ~40–60% lower energy use than conventional casting and rolling routes. The presentation will highlight these emissions benefits, process efficiencies, and the capability of the new Luleå plant to produce a product portfolio – including advanced high-strength steels and automotive exposed panels – with premium quality and sustainability.

Anders Ohlsson holds a master’s degree in mechanical engineering and has extensive experience in technology development, customer collaboration, and business development.
He joined SSAB in 1999 and has since held several leadership positions across technical development and transformation.
Most recently, he led products and process technologies within SSAB’s Luleå transformation project.
