The European Steel Technology Platform (ESTEP) continues its mission to drive innovation in sustainable steel production aiming at climate neutral steel production. The Clean Steel Partnership (CSP) has expanded the collaborative research framework established by the Research Fund for Coal and Steel (RFCS). CSP enables the development and demonstration of transformative low-CO2 technologies at medium to high technology readiness levels. The European Commission has proposed a reform of RFCS, which will be decided in 2026. This presentation will provide insights in highlights of CSP-funded projects with focus on their their contribution to the steel industry's transformation, as well as ESTEP’s efforts to shape standardization as a critical enabler for the adoption of breakthrough technologies in European steelmaking. Another aspect will be the development of the EU framework in regard to collaborative steel research.
ESTEP
Dr. Klaus Peters qualified as Doctor of Engineering in 1993 and gained a state doctorate (Habilitation) in 1998 (RWTH Aachen), starting his industrial career with thyssenkrupp Steel Europe (tkSE).
His senior experiences include production, sales, quality and R&D both on national and international level. From 2011, Dr. Peters joined several working groups and committees of the European Steel Technology Platform (ESTEP) and was in charge of international research projects and European funding of tkSE. He became in secretary general of ESTEP in 2015.
Amongst others, he is member of the Steel Advisory Group (SAG) of the Research Fund for Coal and Steel (RFCS) and board member of the public-private partnership Processes4Planet. He is the executive director of the Horizon Europe Clean Steel Partnership.
In 2021, ESTEP was again appointed as member of the High-Level Group on Energy Intensive Industries.
