Future-proofing steelmaking together – Tata Steel UK and ABB

Thursday 4th June 09:10 - 09:40

Conference

Decarbonization and digitalization are reshaping the future of metals, and real progress comes from collaboration across the value chain. At Port Talbot, Tata Steel UK is working closely with ABB, CLECIM and Tenova to develop a steelmaking environment that is electrified, automated and digitalized, enabling operations that run leaner and cleaner.

In this joint presentation, Tata Steel UK and ABB will share how new approaches to automation and operator enablement are being built into the upcoming pickling line and EAF programme. This includes applying ABB’s electrification, automation and digital solutions together with CLECIM’s mechanical expertise on the pickling line, and electromagnetic stirring and electrical power distribution supporting Tenova’s new EAF installation. These capabilities, combined with next generation tools such as high-density camera systems, integrated automation environments and the shift toward an operator-centric control philosophy, illustrate how this partnership is future-proofing steelmaking and preparing the site for safer, more efficient and lower carbon production.

Speakers

Stephen Winkley

Sales manager, metals and power conversion

ABB

With more than 30 years of metals industry experience, Stephen brings a strong background in engineering, process development, and hands‑on experience working with steel plants. He works closely with metals producers to support the modernization of operations through electrification, automation, and digitalization. Stephen’s current focus is partnering with customers such as Tata Steel UK to help future‑proof operations by applying advanced automation and operator‑centric approaches that enable safer, more efficient, and lower‑carbon steelmaking.

Gavin Thomas

Manufacturing manager, pickle line and link

Tata Steel UK

Gavin is the project manager for Tata Steel UK’s pickle line replacement in Port Talbot, UK, a key element of the wider £1.25 billion UK decarbonisation programme.

With a career spanning more than 30 years in steelmaking at Tata Steel and its predecessor companies, Gavin has progressed from early roles in automation and process control to spending the past 15 years in a range of production and senior management positions.

His extensive experience across both hot and cold rolling, combined with strong production and engineering expertise, gives him a deep understanding not only of what new technologies can achieve but also of the practical realities of integrating them into complex, established operations.

Gavin is particularly passionate about identifying technologies from other industries and adapting them to solve long‑standing challenges within the steel sector.
